The best AI agent depends on the job, because no single agent leads at coding, browsing, research and customer support at once. As of September 2026, the coding shortlist is Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot, and for building apps it is Lovable, Bolt, Replit and v0.

For the web, start with Claude in Chrome or Gemini in Chrome. For desktop and office tasks, look at Claude and ChatGPT Work, or the agent inside Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. For research, use a deep research mode, and for support, a pay-per-resolution agent such as Intercom Fin or Zendesk.

We chose by three tests: the agent finishes the job end to end, you can see and stop what it does, and its price is public. Each table below was checked on September 28, 2026, and every row links its source. Deeper comparisons for each job are linked as you go.

The short version
  • No AI agent is best at everything. Pick by the job, then test two options on a real task.
  • Coding: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot, from free to $20 a month to start.
  • Apps and sites without code: Lovable, Bolt, Replit and v0, most with free plans.
  • Web, desktop and office work: Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Microsoft all ship agents. The one tied to apps you already use is usually the best start.
  • Support: Intercom Fin, Zendesk and Help Scout charge per resolved conversation; Help Scout’s rate is $0.75 and Intercom’s $0.99.

Best AI agents for building websites and apps

If you want a site or app without writing the code yourself, shortlist Lovable, Bolt, Replit and v0. All four run in the browser. Cyborb, a desktop AI agent from Orbioom and our product, takes a different route: it builds on your own computer and can publish the result to a live address. Checked on September 28, 2026:

Credits and usage limits differ a lot between these tools, so compare what a month of real work costs, not just the entry price. Our guide to AI website builders compares Lovable, Bolt and v0 in depth, and Lovable alternatives covers ten options.

Best AI browser agents

For agents that work inside your web browser, start with the one built into a browser you already use: Claude in Chrome or Gemini in Chrome, Browse with Copilot in Edge, or a standalone option such as Comet or Opera Neon. Checked on September 28, 2026:

OpenAI’s ChatGPT desktop app also has a built-in browser and a Chrome extension. Browser agents read untrusted web pages all day, so they are exposed to prompt injection: hidden instructions planted in a page. Our guide to AI browsers covers the safe settings.

Best AI agents for research

For research, use an agent that searches many sources and writes up what it found: Gemini Deep Research, Claude Research, ChatGPT Work or Perplexity. Pick by what else you need it to read, such as your email or your files. Checked on September 28, 2026:

Google says a Deep Research report usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. Developers can also call OpenAI’s deep research models, o3-deep-research and o4-mini-deep-research, through its API. Whichever you use, open the citations your conclusion rests on. How to research anything with AI shows how to brief these tools and check what comes back.

Best AI agents for office work

For documents, spreadsheets, email and slides, the best start is the agent in the suite you already use: Microsoft Copilot, Gemini in Google Workspace, Claude with Cowork or ChatGPT Work. Checked on September 28, 2026:

Best AI agents for customer support

For customer support, the common picks charge by results: Intercom Fin costs $0.99 per outcome, Zendesk bills its AI agents per automated resolution, and Help Scout charges $0.75 per resolution. Checked on September 28, 2026:

What is the best AI agent for non-technical people?

For non-technical people, the best first agent is usually one inside an app you already pay for, with approvals left on. That means Claude or ChatGPT for files and documents, Gemini or Copilot inside your work suite, and an app builder such as Lovable or Bolt if you want a website.

Start with a task you can check in a minute and undo if it goes wrong, such as tidying a folder or drafting a one-page summary. Keep the agent away from payments and email until you trust it. Our plain guide to what an AI agent is explains the controls in everyday words.

Before you pay for any of them, run a quick check:

Check the usage limits before you buy, too. AI usage limits explained covers the five-hour windows and weekly caps that many plans use.

FAQ

What is the best AI agent overall?

There is no single best agent in September 2026. Coding agents, browser agents, desktop agents and support agents solve different problems. Choose the job first, then test two agents from that job’s list on a real task.

Are there free AI agents?

Yes. ChatGPT Work and Codex are included on ChatGPT’s Free plan, GitHub Copilot and Cursor have free plans, Google Antigravity is free for individuals, and Perplexity’s Comet browser is free, though its agent needs a paid plan. Lovable, Bolt and v0 also have free plans with limited credits.

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers; an agent acts. An agent uses tools in a loop until a goal is met, such as editing files or filling in a form. AI agent vs chatbot shows the same requests handled both ways.

Which AI agent is best for a small business?

Start with the one in the software you already pay for, such as Copilot for Microsoft 365 or Gemini for Google Workspace. Then add a support agent if customer questions take up your day. Our list of jobs a small business can hand to AI has tasks to try first.
