The most used AI coding agents in 2026 are Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex and Cursor, according to JetBrains’ survey of more than 15,000 professional developers. Google Antigravity, Devin, Kiro and the open-source OpenCode are strong alternatives. None of them wins at everything.
The right choice depends on where you like to work: in a terminal, in an editor, in the cloud, or in a browser app builder. Below are the best AI coding agents of 2026, grouped by type, each with a fair card and a comparison table. We make Cyborb, a desktop agent that can drive several of these tools. Who is winning: 2026 adoption
JetBrains asked professional developers which AI coding tools they used at work between May and July 2026. Claude Code led by a wide margin, and Codex grew fastest.
In the same survey, 9% used JetBrains’ own AI tools, 7% used OpenCode and 6% used Google Antigravity. Popularity is not the same as fit, though, so start with how you work.
The four kinds of AI coding agents
An AI coding agent reads your code, makes changes, runs commands and tests, and checks the results. The tools differ mostly in where that happens.

Most big products now span several rows. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor each have a terminal tool, an editor experience and some form of cloud or background work. The agents, one by one
Prices are US list prices for individuals, checked September 22, 2026. They change often, so confirm on each vendor’s page.
Anthropic’s agent runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in a desktop app and in the browser. It is built for Claude models: Opus 5.5 (released September 22), Fable 5.1 with a 1M-token context, and Sonnet 5. It comes with Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 billed yearly) and Max (from $100), not the free plan. New this year: background computer use in the macOS desktop app, in beta.
OpenAI’s agent works in the ChatGPT desktop app, an open-source CLI, IDE extensions, the web and iOS, plus cloud tasks and automatic GitHub code review. Models: GPT-6 Astra (OpenAI’s most capable), GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Free and Go ($8) plans get GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app as it rolls out. Plus is $20, Pro starts at $100. GPT-5.5 leaves Codex on October 14, 2026.
An AI-first code editor with agents, a CLI and cloud agents that keep working when you close your laptop. Models: its own Composer 2.5 plus Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok. Hobby is free; Pro $20, Pro+ $60, Ultra $200. In August, SpaceX completed its $60 billion all-stock purchase of Cursor’s maker, Anysphere. September added Projects (beta), where a coordinator agent plans work and delegates it to many agents.
Agent mode in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Xcode and Eclipse, a CLI, and a cloud agent that takes an issue and opens a pull request. It offers a long model menu from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and others. Free includes 2,000 completions a month; Pro is $10, Pro+ $39, Max $100. Since June 1, 2026, chat and agent use draw down token-based AI Credits, while completions stay unlimited on paid plans.
Google’s agent platform: the Antigravity 2.0 desktop app and Antigravity CLI share one agent harness. The CLI replaced Gemini CLI for Google AI Pro, Ultra and free users on June 18, 2026. Models include Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6, and gpt-oss-120b. There is a free tier with weekly limits, and more with Google AI Pro or Ultra.
Cognition’s agent. In June, Devin Desktop launched as the next generation of Windsurf: a full IDE plus Devin Cloud and an agent command center. Windsurf’s pricing page now redirects to Devin’s. Models come from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI, plus Cognition’s own SWE-2. Free, Pro $20, Max $200. Cognition raised more than $2 billion at a $48 billion valuation in September.
From AWS, built around spec-driven development: it turns a prompt into requirements, a design and a task list, then implements them with parallel agents. Models include Claude Opus 5 and Sonnet 5 plus open-weight options. Free (50 credits a month), Pro $20 (1,000 credits), up to Power at $200. Extra credits cost $0.04 each.
A free, MIT-licensed terminal agent with more than 200,000 GitHub stars. You connect the model provider of your choice and pay that provider directly. Cline is a popular Apache-licensed option for editors that also ships as a CLI and SDK. Roo Code’s repository is now archived, with its last update in May 2026.

Are there free AI coding agents?
Yes. Copilot Free, Cursor Hobby, Devin Free, Kiro Free and Antigravity all have free tiers, and Codex offers GPT-6 Luna to Free users in its desktop app. OpenCode and Cline are free software, but you pay for the model you connect. Claude Code is not on Claude’s free plan.
Which AI coding agent is best for beginners?
