The best AI image generator depends on the job. As of September 2026, OpenAI’s GPT Image models top blind comparisons and handle complex prompts and text best. Google’s Nano Banana models are built for editing and consistency, at a low price per image. Midjourney V8 remains our pick for art direction.
For design work, Ideogram and Recraft are purpose-built, Adobe Firefly is the most conservative choice for commercial work, and FLUX.2 is the model to run yourself. Below: what each does best, a pick-by-task table, prices, and who owns what you make.

- Google says Nano Banana 2 keeps up to five characters consistent across a project, and it costs about 7 cents per image through the API.
- Midjourney V8 is the choice for style and mood. Ideogram 4.0 and Recraft V4 are built for type, layouts and vector files.
- Licensing differs more than quality. Recraft’s free-plan images belong to Recraft, and Midjourney requires its Pro or Mega plan for companies with over $1M in yearly revenue.
- In the US, a prompt alone is unlikely to make you the copyright owner of an image.
How we chose
We used three things: Arena’s leaderboard of blind votes between models, each vendor’s own documentation, and the pricing and terms pages as of September 2026. We did not run our own benchmark. Rankings shift monthly, so treat the order as a snapshot.
The year moved fast. These were the releases that shaped the current field:

What each AI image generator does best
OpenAI began rolling Images 2.5 out to all ChatGPT users on September 8, 2026. The API offers two models: Flare for fast everyday images and Sunburst for precise text and layout work. They rank first and second on Arena, marked preliminary because they have fewer votes than older entries.
Google says the model keeps up to five characters and 14 objects consistent across a workflow (the API takes up to four character reference images per request). It renders text well, and outputs from 512px to 4K. It runs in the Gemini app, Search and the API. Nano Banana Pro remains for the hardest tasks, and Nano Banana 2 Lite for volume.
Our pick for mood, texture and a distinctive look, with style references and moodboards. V8 is about five times faster than V7 and renders text better when you put it in quotes. A V8.2 edit model added instruction editing and up to four reference images in August 2026.
Built for posters, campaigns and print-on-demand, with crisp type, native transparency and reliable editing. It is available in the app, through an API, and as open weights.
Recraft says V4 is the only model that generates editable, production-quality SVG files. It also exports PNG, PDF and Lottie, and handles text for menus, signage and packaging.
Firefly Image 5 generates native 4-megapixel images and edits them from a prompt. Adobe says outputs from its Firefly models are safe for commercial use and attaches Content Credentials, a provenance label, to them. The app also hosts partner models, such as Nano Banana 2 and FLUX.2 [pro], which that statement does not cover.
Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is open under Apache 2.0 and runs on a consumer GPU with about 13 GB of memory. The larger [dev] weights carry a non-commercial license, which still lets you use the images commercially, with conditions such as filtering or reviewing output. Running the model itself in a business is the ambiguous part, so read the license first. FLUX 3, announced in July 2026, is rolling out in stages.
ByteDance’s model separates images into editable layers, edits by coordinates and color codes, and accepts up to ten reference images. It ranked tenth on Arena in September 2026.
Arena’s top ten also includes Microsoft’s MAI-Image-2.6, Grok Imagine, Reve 2.1 and Meta’s Muse Image, which are worth a test if you already use those ecosystems.

OpenAI prices its newest image models by tokens, so the cost per image depends on size and quality. Check each pricing page before you commit to a budget.
Who owns AI-generated images?
Your rights come from two places: the tool’s terms, and copyright law. They answer different questions.
The terms decide what the vendor lets you do. OpenAI assigns you its rights in the output, and Google says it won’t claim ownership. Midjourney lets any paying subscriber use images “in just about any way”, but a company with more than $1,000,000 in yearly revenue must be on the Pro or Mega plan. OpenAI and Google both warn that similar images may be generated for other people.
Copyright law decides whether anyone can stop others from copying the image. The US Copyright Office concluded in January 2025 that prompts alone are unlikely to make you the author. Finally, avoid famous characters and brands. Disney, Universal and Warner Bros. sued Midjourney in 2025 over images of their characters, and as of July 2026 there was no ruling on the merits.

The free option most people already have is ChatGPT, which OpenAI is rolling Images 2.5 out to for all users. The Gemini app offers Nano Banana 2. Some free plans make your images public or non-commercial, so read the plan terms.
Which AI image generator is best for text in images?
GPT Image 2.5 and Ideogram 4.0 are the strongest choices for posters, infographics and layouts. Nano Banana 2 is also good at text and can translate it. Keep text short and in quotes, and check spelling at full size.
Can I use AI-generated images commercially?
Usually, on a paid plan. OpenAI assigns you its rights, Google won’t claim ownership, Adobe calls Firefly outputs safe for commercial use, and Midjourney allows it on paid plans, with its large-company rule. Recraft’s free plan does not allow it. None of this stops a claim if your image copies someone else’s character or brand.
Is Midjourney still worth it in 2026?
Yes, if style is the point. It does not appear on Arena’s leaderboard, so there is no blind-vote comparison, but its V8 models are fast, and style references and moodboards give you strong control over look and feel.
