The best Claude Code alternatives in 2026 are OpenAI Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Google Antigravity among commercial tools, and OpenCode, Cline, Kilo Code, Goose and Aider among open-source ones. Which one fits depends on what you want instead: a free plan, other models, open source, an editor, or an app instead of a terminal.
Claude Code is still the most used coding agent at work. In JetBrains’ survey of more than 15,000 professional developers from May to July 2026, 39% used it. So this is not a list of better tools. It is a list of different ones, grouped by the reason you are looking.
One disclosure: Cyborb, a desktop AI agent from Orbioom, is our product. It is included as one entry, labeled as ours.
- Closest paid swaps: Codex for OpenAI’s models, GitHub Copilot for the lowest full paid plan ($10) and many labs’ models, Cursor for an editor.
- Free to start: Copilot Free, Google Antigravity’s free plan and Codex Free. Claude Code itself needs a paid Claude plan.
- Open source with any model, including local ones: OpenCode, Cline, Kilo Code, Goose and Aider. You pay only for the model.
- No terminal: Codex, Goose, OpenCode and Antigravity have desktop apps. So does Claude Code, if the terminal was your only complaint.
- Every price below comes from the vendor’s own page, checked on September 28, 2026.
Why do people look for a Claude Code alternative?
Usually for one of five reasons: cost, usage limits, being tied to one model family, closed source, or the terminal. Some of them have easier fixes than switching.
Cost. Claude Code is not on Claude’s free plan. It starts with Pro at $20 a month ($17 billed yearly), and Max starts at $100.
Usage limits. Coding shares one pool with the rest of your Claude plan, so a heavy session can use up your chat allowance too. Our guide to AI usage limits explains how the windows work.
One model family. Claude Code is built for Claude models. It can reach them through Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry, but the model is Claude.
Closed source. Its GitHub repository has about 148,000 stars, but the license reads “All rights reserved”, so you cannot fork or audit it the way you can an open-source agent.
The terminal. It started as a command-line tool. It now also runs in a desktop app, IDE extensions and the browser, so try those first if the terminal is the only problem.

The Google AI Pro price was checked on September 28, 2026. Two more open-source command-line agents exist, OpenAI’s Codex CLI and Google’s Gemini CLI, but both are built around their makers’ models. Since June 18, 2026, Gemini CLI only serves paid Gemini API keys and enterprise licenses; free, Google AI Pro and Ultra users moved to Antigravity CLI.
Also worth a look: Devin Desktop (the new name for Windsurf), Kiro, JetBrains’ Junie, Warp and Amp. Amp is free to use when you bring your own compute and model keys or subscriptions. Our list of the best AI coding agents of 2026 covers Devin and Kiro in depth.
Is there a free alternative to Claude Code?
Yes. GitHub Copilot, Google Antigravity and Codex all have free tiers, and the open-source agents cost nothing beyond the model you connect.
GitHub Copilot Free includes 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests, plus agent mode and the Copilot CLI.
Google Antigravity has a free individual plan with Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Sonnet and Opus 4.6 and gpt-oss-120b, under weekly limits.
Codex Free includes GPT-6 Luna in the ChatGPT desktop app, as it rolls out.
Open-source agents are free software. Pair one with a local model and you pay nothing per token. Our guide to running models locally shows what your hardware can handle.
Cursor, Devin and Kiro also have free plans. All of these free tiers are sized for trying a tool, not for a full working week.
Which Claude Code alternative is open source?
OpenCode, Cline, Kilo Code, Goose and Aider are the main open-source alternatives, and all five let you choose the model. We pulled these numbers from GitHub’s public API on September 28, 2026. Aider publishes its releases on PyPI, so its latest release comes from there.
| Agent | License | GitHub stars | Latest release | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenCode | MIT | 210,597 | 1.18.33, Sept 28, 2026 | Active |
| Cline | Apache-2.0 | 69,489 | CLI 3.0.65, Sept 24, 2026 | Active |
| Goose | Apache-2.0 | 54,737 | 1.52.0, Sept 23, 2026 | Active |
| Aider | Apache-2.0 | 49,242 | 0.86.2, Feb 12, 2026 | Slower: last update May 2026 |
| Kilo Code | MIT | 27,428 | JetBrains 7.1.8, Sept 25, 2026 | Active |
| Roo Code | Apache-2.0 | 24,290 | 3.54.0, May 15, 2026 | Archived |
Stars measure attention, not quality. A few differences matter in practice:
OpenCode runs in a terminal, a desktop app or an IDE extension. It can sign in with a GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription instead of an API key.
Cline and Kilo Code live in your editor. Kilo Code’s own gateway charges provider rates with no markup, plus a 5% fee when you buy credits.
Goose is a desktop app plus a CLI. It now belongs to the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation.
Aider commits every change to git with a message, so each step is easy to review or undo. Its pace has slowed in 2026.
Many older lists still recommend Roo Code. Its repository is now archived, and its last release came out in May 2026, so pick a maintained project instead.
Which alternative works with other models?
GitHub Copilot and Cursor give you models from several labs under one subscription. The open-source agents let you plug in almost any provider, including models on your own machine.
Cursor offers its own Composer model plus Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok.
Devin Pro includes models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, SpaceXAI and open-source labs, plus Cognition’s own SWE-2.
Junie, JetBrains’ agent, supports more than ten models with your own keys, at provider rates.
OpenCode connects to 75+ providers and Goose to 15+, and both can run local models.
An agent is only as good as the model behind it. A small local model will not match a frontier model on a hard, multi-file task, so test on your real work. Our coding agent leaderboard collects public benchmark scores.
What is cheaper than Claude Code?
Among the subscriptions in the table, Codex Go at $8 is the lowest price, and GitHub Copilot Pro at $10 is the lowest that includes an agent in your editor, a CLI and a cloud agent. Both undercut Claude Pro’s $20.
With open-source agents, your cost is whatever the model costs. OpenCode can also use a Copilot or ChatGPT subscription you already pay for.
The sticker price is not the whole story. A $10 plan that runs out on day ten can cost you more, in waiting or extra usage, than a $20 plan that lasts the month. Compare what each plan actually allows; our AI coding plans compared lines them up.
Which alternative has an app instead of a terminal?
Codex, Goose, OpenCode, Google Antigravity and Cyborb (ours) all have desktop apps. Claude Code has one too.
Codex runs in the ChatGPT desktop app, which is also where the free tier lives.
Goose has a native desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows.
OpenCode and Antigravity each pair a desktop app with a CLI.
Cyborb, our product, is a desktop app for macOS, with Windows and Linux in unsigned beta, plus the same agent in a terminal. It runs its own models on three tiers or drives your Claude, Codex, Cursor or Grok account, and you can switch per session. It can also publish what it builds to a live address. It is in public beta.
How to switch without starting over
Your project rules can come with you. Most agents read AGENTS.md, a plain Markdown file of project instructions. Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md, and it can also read AGENTS.md on its own or alongside CLAUDE.md. Put your shared rules in AGENTS.md and every agent follows the same playbook. Our AGENTS.md guide shows what to put in it.
This prompt does the move for you, in Claude Code or in the tool you are moving to:
Read CLAUDE.md and any files it imports in this repository. Create AGENTS.md at the root with every build, test and style rule, in the same order. Leave out anything that only Claude Code understands, such as slash commands, hooks and subagents. List those separately so I can recreate them in the new tool. Then replace the contents of CLAUDE.md with one line, @AGENTS.md, so Claude Code keeps working too.
FAQ
What is the best alternative to Claude Code?
There is no single best one. Codex is the closest match for terminal work with a different model family, Copilot has the lowest full paid plan and many models, Cursor suits people who want an editor, and OpenCode leads the open-source agents on GitHub stars.
Is there a free version of Claude Code?
No. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or pay-as-you-go API billing. For free, try GitHub Copilot Free, Google Antigravity’s free plan, Codex Free, or an open-source agent with a local model.
Can I use Claude models without Claude Code?
Yes. Cursor, Devin and Antigravity’s free plan offer Claude models, and every open-source agent here can use Claude with your own Anthropic API key.
Will my CLAUDE.md work in other agents?
Not directly, because most other agents read AGENTS.md. Move the shared rules into AGENTS.md and import it from CLAUDE.md, so every tool reads the same instructions.
