AI search is mainstream in 2026. ChatGPT has more than 1 billion weekly active users, Google says AI Overviews reach over 2.5 billion people a month and AI Mode over 1 billion, and 49% of US adults use AI chatbots. Yet Google still sends websites far more visits than any assistant, and when an AI summary appears, people click a regular result about half as often.

Every number below is dated and linked to its source. Company figures are self-reported. A vendor study comes from a firm that sells SEO, analytics or PR tools, and we say which firm and how it measured. Where good studies disagree, we show both.

The short version
  • ChatGPT passed 1 billion weekly users in August 2026 (OpenAI). In a February 2026 Pew survey, 49% of US adults used AI chatbots and 42% used them to search for information.
  • AI Overviews appeared on 18% of Google searches in Pew’s March 2025 data, but on 51.5% of 11,500 queries in a 2026 academic study. How you count decides the number.
  • With an AI summary on the page, Pew saw clicks on regular results fall from 15% to 8% of visits. Google says total clicks are “relatively stable” but gives no figures.
  • Wikipedia, Reddit and YouTube rank near the top of most citation studies, but a domain’s share can swing sixfold or more when an engine changes.
  • Google sent nearly 40% of traffic to 76,000 sites in an Ahrefs vendor study, and ChatGPT 0.21%, though ChatGPT’s referrals grew 206% in a year (Semrush).

More than a billion people use the big AI search tools, by the companies’ own counts, and about half of US adults use AI chatbots. These are the headline usage numbers as of September 2026.

Independent surveys cover fewer people, but the numbers do not come from the companies themselves. Pew Research Center asked 5,119 US adults in February 2026, and the full report is on Pew’s site.

Big user counts do not mean most searches go through AI. In a vendor analysis of Similarweb’s US clickstream panel, SparkToro found that only 0.34% of Google searches from January to April 2026 went to AI Mode. Both can be true: a monthly user may try AI Mode once and keep searching the usual way.

How often do AI Overviews appear?

Somewhere between about one in five searches and half of all queries, depending on who counts and how. The three best-documented figures measure different things.

Checked on September 28, 2026:

The gap is mostly about counting. Pew counted searches as people actually made them, so frequent short searches weigh a lot, while the SIGIR study counts each query in its sample once. SparkToro does not say how it got its figure. The studies also span a year of rapid change.

What happens to clicks when AI answers appear?

People click regular results about half as often when an AI summary appears, according to the largest independent study. Vendor data points the same way, and Google disputes the gloomiest readings without publishing numbers.

On the other side is Google. In August 2025, Liz Reid, head of Google Search, wrote that total organic clicks from Search to websites had been “relatively stable year-over-year”. In July 2026, Sundar Pichai said Google sends “billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search”. Neither statement came with a baseline or a method.

How to respond to the drop is covered in SEO in the age of AI.

Which sources do AI assistants cite?

Wikipedia, Reddit and YouTube rank near the top of most citation studies, but every engine has its own favorites, and a single engine update can move a domain’s share sixfold or more. These studies measure citations in different ways, so compare them within a row, not across rows.

Checked on September 28, 2026:

StudyMethod in briefFinding
Profound, vendor, June 2025680 million citations, August 2024 to June 2025Wikipedia was 7.8% of all ChatGPT citations. In AI Overviews, Reddit led with 2.2% and YouTube had 1.9%. In Perplexity, Reddit had 6.6%
Semrush, vendor, November 2025230,000 prompts over 13 weeks, July to October 2025The share of ChatGPT answers citing Reddit fell from about 60% to about 10% by mid-September 2025, and Wikipedia from about 55% to under 20%
Semrush, vendor, August 2026Promptwatch tracking dataReddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell from 3.8% to 0.5% in August 2026. Promptwatch called the drop provisional
Muck Rack, vendor, May 202625 million links from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini across 17 industriesMost-cited domains: Wikipedia for ChatGPT, Reddit for Gemini, PubMed Central for Claude. ChatGPT cited sources in 96% of answers, Gemini in 82%, Claude in 55%
Wix Studio AI Search Lab, vendor, March 202675,000 answers and 1,056,727 citations from ChatGPT, AI Mode and PerplexityListicles took 21.9% of citations, articles 16.7%, product pages 13.7%, comparison pages 2.2% and alternatives pages 0.29%

Do AI answers follow Google’s rankings? Less than you might expect. In an Ahrefs vendor study of 15,000 long-tail queries (August 2025), 28.6% of Perplexity’s cited pages ranked in Google’s top 10, against about 8% for ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot.

Google’s own AI Overviews drifted too. Ahrefs found that 37.9% of their cited pages ranked in Google’s top 10 in March 2026 (863,000 results pages), down from about 76% in July 2025, though it also changed its method. What this means for your own pages is covered in our guide to getting cited by AI search.

Do AI assistants prefer independent sources or brand sites?

It depends on the question, and two large vendor studies point in opposite directions. For general and “best of” questions, studies find a strong lean toward independent sources. For local, location-specific questions, brand-managed pages and listings dominate.

  • Independent sources win: Muck Rack’s vendor study found earned media, meaning independent coverage, in 84% of AI citations, with paid content at 0.3%. An academic study by Chen et al. (September 2025) found a “systematic and overwhelming bias towards Earned media” in AI search.

  • Brand sites win: a Yext vendor study of 6.8 million citations (July to August 2025) found 86% came from sources brands control, such as their websites (44%) and listings (42%). Forums like Reddit were 2%. Its queries covered retail, finance, healthcare and food service, with location context.

A fair reading: for “open now near me”, a restaurant’s own listing is the likely citation; for “best project management tool”, an independent review is.

How much traffic do AI assistants send?

Far less than Google, but it is growing fast. For most sites, AI assistants are still a small channel measured in fractions of a percent.

206%

Semrush, April 2026

Ahrefs puts the gap at 190 times more traffic from Google than from ChatGPT, using analytics data from the 76,000 sites. Semrush’s clickstream study adds that over 30% of ChatGPT’s referral traffic goes to just 10 domains, and over 20% to Google itself.

How often ChatGPT searches the web at all is another point of disagreement. Checked on September 28, 2026:

The prompt sets differ: Semrush counts all prompts in its panel, while Graphite tested comparison questions only. To measure what assistants send your own site, see our guide on tracking AI traffic.

AI companies also take far more than they send back. Cloudflare, which sells bot management, measured crawl-to-referral ratios in July 2025: pages crawled for every visit referred. Anthropic’s was 38,066 to 1, OpenAI’s 1,091 to 1, Perplexity’s 195 to 1, Microsoft’s 40.7 to 1 and Google’s 5.4 to 1.

By June 2026, Cloudflare says 52% of the crawler requests it sees were for AI training, up from 22% in spring 2025. Which crawlers those are, and how to control them, is in our AI crawlers list.

FAQ

How many people use AI search in 2026?

By company counts, ChatGPT has more than 1 billion weekly users (August 2026), and Google says AI Overviews reach over 2.5 billion people a month. In Pew’s February 2026 survey, 49% of US adults used AI chatbots and 42% used them to search for information.

What percentage of Google searches show AI Overviews?

Estimates range from 18% of searches (Pew, March 2025 data) to 51.5% of queries in a SIGIR 2026 study. The difference comes mostly from what is counted: searches as people make them, or a set of distinct queries.

Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

The evidence says yes. Pew found clicks on regular results fell from 15% to 8% of visits when a summary appeared, and Ahrefs found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top result. Google says total organic clicks are “relatively stable” but has not published figures.

How much traffic does ChatGPT send to websites?

Still little for most sites. In Ahrefs’ study of 76,000 sites, ChatGPT sent 0.21% of traffic against nearly 40% from Google. Its referrals are growing fast, up 206% in a year in Semrush’s clickstream data.

What sources does ChatGPT cite most?

Wikipedia topped ChatGPT’s citations in both Profound’s and Muck Rack’s studies. Reddit’s share has swung sharply: Semrush saw it fall twice, in September 2025 and August 2026.

Key takeaways
  • AI search is mainstream: over a billion weekly ChatGPT users and half of US adults on chatbots.
  • AI Overview frequency depends on how you count: 18% of searches or 51.5% of queries.
  • Clicks on regular results roughly halve when an AI summary appears.
  • Citation shares move fast, and independent sources win for “best of” questions.
  • Google still sends far more traffic than any assistant, but AI referrals are growing.
